Starting Out
This page is for when you're just starting out.
Start by reading the icons at the top of the screen with the little monkey. His name is Ow and he will help you through the start of the game. The Quests Bar looks like this:
Click on all of these in any order. Don't yet click on Turnip because you won't have any. You also won't have carrots yet either. You'll learn more about that later on. You can't click on anything that is the color gray.
Once you click on the following:
"Feed, drink, groom, stroke" click continue on the Quests Bar. Keep clicking continue until you get to the next quest. By the time it says "give a turnip to Horse" (Horse is the default name I am using) you will have 5 turnips. That is when you can click on the turnip button.
Here are some things that you will have to        answer throughout the quests:
-The price of a Helio's Ray is 1 Pass
-Your horse has to be 6 months old to register at an Equestrian Center
-Your horse can enter competitions at three years
-You get 2,000 Equus for inviting a new player.

There are various other questions, but those are all simple and very easy to answer. The answers above are just the most important ones that will help you out. They're also the ones that I had most trouble with when starting.
At a certain quest you will start having to age your horse to move farther into the game. When you're told to age your horse, always put it to bed first. Otherwise it will lose energy and morale. When         aging your horse, click on this pyramid:
Once the time comes for you to register your horse in its first EC, just follow the arrows. They'll tell you what to do!
Wow, you've made it really far! Now it's about around the time where you get a job. You're going to have to be a groom for now because of the low senority. Just click on the link in the Quests Bar (On Howrse the links are in a brownish writing). Click the link and look for a 3 Week job that pays you 105 Equus. If you can't find that, at least get a 3 week job. Once that job ends, go and look for a job as the next best thing!
Okay, now you have a horse, a job, and everything you need. I think you're ready to complete the quests on your own! Good luck to you!
Also, if you're having any trouble, then just contact me on Howrse! My name is Mownkey, and I am willing to answer any questions!
If you are still having trouble, here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions!

What do I do to change my horse's name?

If you want to change the name of your horse, go to your horse's page. There is a "+" icon to the right of your horse's name. Click on it and choose "Modify profile".
But you can't change the affix of a horse or pony if you aren't his original breeder.

How can I have an affix?

You need at least 30 days of seniority to reserve an affix.
Once you meet the criteria, you can register your affix using the link in "My office".

How can I create a breeding farm?

You need 60 days of seniority to create a breeding farm. When you have them, go to your horses' and use the "Create Breeding Farm" link to register yours.
Once your farm is created, it's up to you to put your horses or ponies in it using the "+" icon on each of their profiles. This icon is to the right of their names.

Where can I find a whip, a tub of grease, or a saddle cloth?

You find these and other items by putting your horse in the box for the day. But it's not automatic, so you'll need a little luck.

My horse has less than 5% energy. I'm being told that he might die. What can I do?

To boost its energy if it's not too late according to the history (actions can't be performed after midnight), you can give it a turnip, a carrot, or put it in the meadow. If it is too late, you can still use the Black Orchid available on the Black Market.

A message tells me that my horse has not recovered because he did not have his 10 hours' rest. What does this mean?

Your horse wakes up at 8:00 a.m. Depending on the temperature, you need to put it to bed in the box or the meadow no later than 10:00 p.m. (time in its history) so it gets some good rest.

My horse is not sleeping. I put him to bed to sleep but nothing's happening.

In order for your horse to fall asleep and go from one day to the next, you have to put it to bed in the meadow or the box (for that, it needs to be boarded in an equestrian center).
Then you either choose to use an aging point or wait until the next real day to start a new day for your horse. No message appears in the history stating that the horse is sleeping. That is indicated in the box at the top left corner of the page.

If I cross horses with special bonuses (Medusa's blood, golden apple, philospher's stone, etc.), will the foals inherit them?

No, foals will be « normal » horses, not Pegasuses. They won't have a special coat and won't inherit immortality.

My mare is foaling and I don't have enough money to call the vet. What will happen?

You have to call a vet the day your mare foals. This will cost 200 . If you do not call the vet, you will lose the foal. If you don't have enough money to pay for the vet:
you can sell items that are in your stock back to the store,
you can give lessons with your other horses or make them compete,
if this is not enough to get the required amount of money, don't go to the page of the mare who is about to foal and don't make her do any actions. This way, she will not age, which will leave you time to save money with your salary and your other horses (by putting them in the pasture you will have less feeding costs). You can also sell one of your other horses,
If you already made your mare do at least one action and you still can't find the money required with the above suggestions, then the only solution you have is to make up the lack of funds needed for foaling by crediting your Equus reserve with a pass.

My horse has all its stars filled in in the "Training" box but not in the "Skills" one. Why is this?

Not all horses are equal. You can't make them reach a 100% skill level in every discipline. Their capacities are limited. They vary by breed and parentage, especially cross breeds. Once training is finished, the horse can still earn skill points from rides and competitions, but not an unlimited number. A horse's potential is not infinite.

My horse's skills have reduced compared to yesterday. Why?

After a horse reaches 25 years old, its skills progressively decrease; the only time this doesn't happen is when the horse has received the Philosopher's Stone before its 25th birthday. If the horse receives the Philosopher's Stone after its 25th birthday, it stops losing skills, but does not regain the skills it has already lost. For more details, please read the aging section in the breeder's tutorial.

When I make my horse compete or take him for a ride, the gain in skills is 0%. Why?

The skills a horse can earn from rides and competitions are limited. It depends on its breed and capacities. There comes a time when the horse can't improve anymore.

I put a bid on a horse but I don't want to anymore. Can I withdraw my bid?

No, you can't cancel a bet once it's made. You have to wait for another player to make a higher one.

I don't have access to the private sales, but I would like to sell my horse to a friend. Can I do this?

No, reserved bids are not allowed and cost 1 karma point. You'll have to wait before you can sell a horse to one specific player.

How can I get a unicorn?

There are two ways to get a Unicorn. You can buy one (see the section of the manual on horse trading) or breed one. Breeding Unicorns is a little special, so check out the section on reproduction in the breeder's manual to learn more.

My only horse died, what can I do?

If you have 10 days of seniority, you can buy a new one in the auctions.
If you don't have enough seniority yet, the best solution is to restart your game. To restart your game, click the link on the bottom of your "My Profile" page.
If you restart your game, you'll start over with a new horse. You will lose your horses, job, seniority and passes, and your reserve goes back to its initial value (2,000 ).
You may not restart your game more than once every 5 days.
